Art Therapy Higher Certificate Programme

  • This programme serves as the extension of Art Therapy Certificate Program, aiming at providing more professional training to people who wish to further equip themselves in integrating elements of art therapy into practice. 

  • This programme further integrates theories and practices, taking a more in-depth exploration on art therapy application, leading to enhancement of students' proficiency in implementing knowledge and skills.

  • Programme content covers art, emotions, traumas, practical therapeutic interventions, self-adjustment, and group design, attaining a more holistic training.

  • Each course comprises online classes and face-to-face tutorials, allowing flexible arrangement of study time; at the same time facilitating teaching support and interaction among classmates. 

  • The commencement of all courses are arranged in one academic year, which is divided into 3 terms. Students may freely choose to study any courses based on their own interest.

  • Mode of course delivery will not be stated on the graduation certificate. 

  • Lecture notes are written in Chinese, with technical terms stated in English also. Language of instruction is Cantonese.

Programme Structure

There are a total of 7 courses in this programme, including 2 core subjects and 5 elective subjects. Students can take courses from the above 2 categories freely without preset sequence; and can suspend study based on personal need temporarily. Certificate would be issued upon completion of each course with passing grade.

 

To attain more comprehensive learning, students are recommended to study all required courses and at least 2 elective courses. Students completing the above requirement within 3 years would be awarded a programme graduation certificate and an academic transcript. Students can also study 1 to 2 courses first to have a taste on whether this programme is suitable for themselves; and afterward, decide whether to study other courses to fulfill the graduation requirement.

Certificate

 

This is an academic programme, which content is designed delicately and professionally; and is not an interest class.

Each course consists of 10 lectures, with 14 hours of self-learning and 6 hours of tutorial lectures. Students are required to complete 20 hours of assignments and assessments. Students obtaining 60 marks or above would be awarded a certificate. Programme graduation certificates, academic transcripts, and certificates of each course are issued by Tharros Centre, as evident to the passion and understanding toward art therapy of the students.

Tuition Fee

Tuition fee is HK$2700 per course. Students are required to make payment 4 to 8 weeks before commencement for each course to reserve offer; and need not pay all courses intended to study at once.

Early Bird Discount :

By enrolling in the course and settling payment by 20/4/2024, students can have a 10% discount.

Companion Discount :

When 2 students enroll in the same course together, each student can enjoy a 10% discount. When 3 or more students enroll in the same course together, each student can enjoy a 15% discount.

 

If students would like to cancel enrollment of the course, application of refund shall be made before course commencement. [Refund Terms & Conditions] apply.

Entrance Requirement

There is no academic prerequisite in studying this programme, however, individuals intended to study must critically evaluate their ability in apprehending life issues and handling discussions related. The language of instruction of this programme is Chinese and Cantonese. Extraordinary drawing technique is not compulsory for taking this programme, but students should be interested in visual art. Besides, since cases of psychological disturbance will be analyzed during classes, students are required to regulate own emotion to learn attentively.

Although there is no academic prerequisite in studying this programme, applicants are required to complete all required courses in Art Therapy Certificate Programme before participating in this programme. Application of course exemption in special circumstance would be assessed on a case-by-case basis.

3. Applicants admitted are required to pay the tuition fee of the first course taken within the designated period. Please refer to [Payment Method] for more information. 

 

4. After payment, the application procedure will be completed, and admitted applicants can wait for course commencement and attend the course as scheduled.

Theories and Principles of
Art and Emotion

[Core course]

This course discusses in depth on how emotion reacts to art, and how art triggers emotion. Understanding the theories and principles regarding interaction between emotion and art is fundamental in art therapy. Experiments on visual and auditory art are performed to help student master the above concepts through experience, so that they can grasp the ideas for art therapy interventions design.

AT3201
Compassion Focused
Art Therapy

[Elective course]

This course is composed based on Paul Gilbert's Compassion Focused Therapy; and this course incorporates the core principles of this therapy into art therapy. If you believe that psychotherapies cannot solely rely on rational analysis and belief correction, this therapy might be a suitable alternative for you, as compassion provides another humanistic therapeutic direction. This course systematically reviews the principle and procedures of compassion focused therapy; and integrates it with art therapy. Students will acquire a comprehensive and systematic art therapy intervention upon completion of this course.

Art Therapy for Personal Growth and Self-Adjustment

[Core course]

Before you assist others, always put your oxygen mask on first. Before learning to use art therapy to help others, we should first cultivate our personal growth, and settle our issues throughout development. This course provides professional guidance to help students attain personal growth and self-adjustment through the use of art. Students will reflect on their personal issues and traumas in real life, such that they will be prepared to go on the road toward art therapy.

Child Handicraft Therapy

 

[Elective course]

 

Handicraft plays an important and unforgettable role in all children's growth. It is their source of joy, satisfaction, pride, and confidence. This course deeply investigates on different types of children handicrafts, in attempt to understand the psychological effect brought by each type, in an effort to explore on how to improve the design of handcraft, such that children's fun gadgets can be turned into effective children art therapy tools to enhance their psychological wellness.

Advanced Art Therapy for
Bereavement and Trauma

[Elective course]

Traumas and bereavement are inevitable in life. This course helps students understand how to use art to eliminate fear as well as unconscious blocks in daily living due to traumas, such that motivation of life can be restored. For bereavement, this course will explain the mechanism of bereavement formation and help students acquire the method of transforming grief by use of art.

[Elective course]

This course discusses on creating artworks in Christian spiritual aspect which are applicable in daily life, with the purpose of bringing spiritual messages and feeling into real life, so that the therapeutic effect of Christian art can be exhibited, leading to improvement in one's spiritual functioning.

Art Therapy Workshop Design

 

[Elective course]

This course provides professional procedural guidance in helping students to design workshops and groupworks. It is particularly suitable for social workers, teachers, and programme workers. This course is student-based, focusing on their own work environment and target service users. The lecturer will guide students to finish a workshop design step-by-step. If students have chances to put their designs in action, the lecturer will also help evaluate the workshops or groupworks afterward.

Learning model:

This subject adopts project-based learning model, aiming at facilitating design and implementation of art therapy workshop through online lectures and one-on-one supervisory consultation. Students are required to schedule consultation sessions with lecturer.
