Art Therapy Certificate Programme

  • This programme is constructed dedicatedly with reference to the latest guideline from American Art Therapy Association, incorporated with years of experience in teaching and providing psychotherapy in Tharros Centre. 

  • Programme content strives for a balanced coverage between theory and practice, allowing students to put theory into practice flexibly upon completion of study. 

  • Psychology element is integrated in programme design, helping students having no training in psychology or counselling to acquire basic concepts in psycho-development and psychopathology. 

  • This programme is oriented to therapeutic art therapy, which emphasizes both psychological expression and therapeutic intervention. 

  • This programme is specifically suitable for teachers, social workers, programme workers, art enthusiasts, people with emotional disturbance and their caregivers.  

  • The study duration of this programme varies from 1 year to 3 years. Students can suspend study within this period. Tuition fee are charged on a per-course basis. 

  • Students can freely choose to study any course based on personal needs. Course certificate would be issued after completion of any course; and programme graduation certificate and transcript would be awarded upon completion of required credits for graduation. 

  • Lecture notes are written in Chinese; and language of instruction is Cantonese.

  • Classes are available in classroom and online Zoom simultaneously so that they will not be affected by change of pandemic situation or geographical limitation.

​Programme Structure

There are a total of 7 courses in this programme, including 2 core subjects and 5 elective subjects. Students can take courses from the above 2 categories freely without preset sequence; and can suspend study based on personal need temporarily. Certificate would be issued upon completion of each course with passing grade.

To attain more comprehensive learning, students are recommended to study all required courses and at least 2 elective courses. Students completing the above requirement within 3 years would be awarded a programme graduation certificate and an academic transcript. Students can also study 1 to 2 courses first to have a taste on whether this programme is suitable for themselves; and afterward, decide whether to study other courses to fulfill the graduation requirement.

Tuition Fee

Tuition fee is HK$2200 per course. Students are required to make payment 4-8 weeks before commencement for each course to reserve offer; and need not pay all courses intended to study at once.

Early Bird Discount :

By enrolling in the course and settling payment by 2/12, students can have a 10% discount.

Companion Discount :

When 2 students enroll in the same course together, each student can enjoy a 10% discount. When 3 or more students enroll in the same course together, each student can enjoy a 15% discount.

​Entrance Requirement

 

There is no academic prerequisite in studying this programme, however, individuals intended to study must critically evaluate their ability in apprehending life issues and handling discussions related. The language of instruction of this programme is Chinese and Cantonese. Extraordinary drawing technique is not compulsory for taking this programme, but students should be interested in visual art. Besides, since cases of psychological disturbance will be analyzed during classes, students are required to regulate own emotion to learn attentively.

Certificate

 

This is an academic programme, which content is designed delicately and professionally; and is not an interest class.

Each course consists of 10 lectures, with 20 hours teaching hours. Students are required to complete classwork, as well as 20 hours of assignments and assessments. Students obtaining 60 marks or above with 80% attendance would be awarded a certificate. Programme graduation certificates, academic transcripts, and certificates of each course are issued by Tharros Centre, as evident to the passion and understanding toward art therapy of the students.

3. Applicants admitted are required to pay the tuition fee of the first course taken within the designated period. Please refer to [Payment Method] for more information. 

 

4. After payment, the application procedure will be completed, and admitted applicants can wait for course commencement and attend the course as scheduled.

Art Therapy for Emotions and Trauma
.

This course is the fundamental of the Art Therapy Certificate Course. It introduces what art therapy is, and how therapeutic effect can be attained through art creation. It also allows you to acquire basic understanding toward common negative emotions and trauma-related psychology. You will learn about the psychological mechanisms behind different emotions and trauma; and learn to use art as therapeutic intervention in accordance as well. This course looks into anxiety, depression, anger, self-blame, disappointment, and post-traumatic responses. More importantly, this course helps you to have personal adjustment, walk through past issues, and regulate own emotion through self-reflection, such that positive psychological wellbeing can be upheld.

Outstanding artistic skill is not necessary for successful art therapy. However, whether feelings and messages can be effectively conveyed through art is significant in influencing the therapeutic effect. This course aims at enhancing your ability of art expression of own feelings, as well as effective use of the language of art. It covers the use of common drawing medias and recent trending art materials. You will be taught to understand more about your inner feeling, and connect your feeling with art, such that your feeling can be expressed by art effectively. This course does not require students to have superb art skills. Students will be trained to strengthen the ability of expressing inner feeling based on own drawing skill, such that they can better put their thoughts and feelings into painting, so as to equip themselves to implement art therapy.

Art Therapy for Children
.

 

The world from a children's perspective is hugely different from that of an adult. Their psychological changes across development, emotions, cognition, and art expression are unique. These factors shall be taken into consideration when conducting art therapy interventions for them. In this course, you will perceive the world from children’s perspective, and understand the psychological development of children from 0 to 12 years old, including possible emotions and trauma caused by problematic parenting. You will learn to help the children effectively regulate their inner world through the use of art. Early mature children and gifted children, as well as children family therapy will also be covered in the course.

Art Therapy for Adolescents
.

 

Adolescent stage is an important transitional stage which children grow up and become an independent adult. Stagnation in this stage often lays up troubles in later adult stage. Adolescents gradually get rid of childishness, while their mental set are not completely mature yet. This makes their mindset and world view differ from those of adults and children. This course aims at discussing the possible challenges and difficulties faced by adolescents during development, including self-image, motivation, interpersonal relationship, connection to the world, rebellion, childhood trauma, etc. You will learn to use art to enter their world and echo with them, in attempt to help them regulate themselves, eliminate extreme beliefs, balance ideal and reality, such that adolescent vitality and passion can be restored.

Art Therapy for Aged and Thanatology
.

 

Eldercare does not limit to physical rehabilitation treatment only. As life expectancy rises, the importance of psychological wellbeing of elderly is not negligible. One experiences various losses starting from retirement, including identity, functioning, connection, etc. In light of such, this course intensively introduces the psychological changes across stages from retirement to death, including people with dementia. Students will learn to use art to improve the psychological wellbeing of the aged people in face of countdown to life, such that they can live a beautiful life with dignity in twilight years. Course content covers the essential distinction of needs between male and female elderly, allowing you to acknowledge the gender difference in performing art therapy for them. Besides, this course introduces the psychological need of caregiver in facing the close one getting through the above stages, and bereavement art therapy after the death of close ones as well. It helps students to reflect on the meaning of life.

Art Therapy for Autism

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder. Extensive structural abnormalities are found in the brain of people with ASD, which leads to various degree of impact in different aspects of their lives. Therefore, intervention treatment should not solely be directed to social communication and emotional regulation training. This course leads us into the world of people with ASD, apprehending the mechanisms of how autistic features were formed across development; and understand their inner feeling and needs, along with how they perceive the world. This allows you to recognize their restriction and connect with them through the use of art, with the aim of opening their heart to connect to the world. The course content covers common challenges in daily life and interpersonal relationship faced by people with classic autism as well as high functioning autism (HFA, previously known as Asperger syndrome).

Art Therapy in Christian Spirituality
.

 

Religion is an important aspect in life for Christian. This course explores on the critical aspect of a person apart from physical and psychological: Spirituality. Students will investigate the role of religion in life, the connection between religion and oneself and the world, together with how art facilitates holistic wellbeing in physical, psychological, and spiritual aspects. This course reviews the development of views regarding spirituality throughout historical decades, with the objective of comprehending a more in-depth meaning and function of spirituality. In addition, spiritual health issues, together with the implication and formation mechanism of spiritual trauma will be looked into. The course design integrates aestheticism, core religion in Christianity and Christian religious behaviours (for example, reading bible, singing hymns, praying), and adapts the format of retreating. It provides a peaceful environment for students to tranquilize their mind, to reflect on themselves, and to focus on the bio-psycho-spiritual wellbeing; with the purpose of investigating on the use of art in creating a more desirable environment to heal spiritual trauma, such that spiritual health can be upheld.

This course comprehensively addresses on the obstacles and challenges in different marital stages as well as common crisis in marriage. It allows you to understand the psychological changes of the husband and wife from an art perspective, and learn to enhance the adaptability in facing different marital stages in order to compose a beautiful marriage.

Parenting plays a significant role in children's development process, yet it is full of changes and challenges. Throughout the developmental stages from a newborn baby to a grown-up adult, there are different changes and needs for different stages, in which both parents and children are required to adapt to in accordance. This course addresses in details on the issues faced by parents throughout children’s different developmental stages, including parental stress, changes in identity, and common challenges. You can be inspired through reviewing and re-understanding parenting through the lens of art, also learn to enhance parenting and relieve parental stress by adopting the concept of pursuing beauty in life. This allows establishment of beautiful relationship with children, such that children can be facilitated to author their beautiful life.
